The state licenses you and the business

Electricians and electrical contractors have their own licensing law in Kentucky, run by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. Unlicensed work is allowed only under direct, on-site supervision of a licensed electrician. That's how you get your hours. It's not how you run your own jobs.

Get the current license classes, experience requirements and exam schedule straight from DHBC before you plan your launch date.

$1,000,000 in general liability

An electrical contractor in Kentucky carries $1,000,000 in general liability, plus proof of workers' comp and unemployment insurance. Price that before you price anything else. It's one of your biggest fixed costs, and it goes into your overhead on every job.
